FAQ's

1. What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses guided relaxation and focused attention (hypnosis) to help access the subconscious mind. This allows for positive changes in thoughts, behaviours, and emotional responses.

2. What does hypnosis feel like?

Most people describe it as a deeply relaxed, calm, and focused state—similar to daydreaming or being absorbed in music or a film. You remain aware and in control at all times.

3. Will I lose control or be unconscious?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep or unconsciousness. You are fully aware and cannot be made to do anything against your will.

4. Can everyone be hypnotised?

Most people can enter a hypnotic state if they are willing and open to the process. It’s a natural mental state we experience daily (e.g., getting lost in thought).

5. How many sessions will I need?

This varies depending on the issue and the individual. Some people notice changes after 1–3 sessions, while others may benefit from a short course of sessions.

6. What issues can hypnotherapy treat?

Hypnotherapy can support a wide range of concerns, including:

Anxiety and stress  Phobias (e.g., spiders, flying, medical procedures)  Smoking cessation  Weight management  Sleep issues  Pain management  Confidence and self-esteem  Habit change (e.g., nail biting)

7. Can hypnotherapy help with pain?

Yes. Hypnotherapy can help reduce the perception of pain and improve coping strategies. It’s often used alongside medical care for chronic conditions or procedural anxiety.

8. Is hypnotherapy effective for anxiety?

Yes, many clients find it very effective. It can help retrain automatic responses, reduce physical symptoms, and promote a calmer mindset.

Safety & Professional Concerns

9. Is hypnotherapy safe?

Yes, when conducted by a trained professional, hypnotherapy is considered safe and non-invasive.

10. Are there any side effects?

Most people feel relaxed and positive afterwards. Occasionally, someone may feel slightly tired or emotionally reflective, but this usually passes quickly.

11. Is hypnotherapy scientifically supported?

There is growing evidence supporting hypnotherapy for issues such as pain management, anxiety, and IBS, particularly when used as part of a broader treatment approach.

12. Should hypnotherapy replace medical treatment?

No. Hypnotherapy is complementary and should not replace medical advice or treatment. Always consult your GP for medical conditions.

The Session Experience

13. What happens during a session?

A typical session includes:

Discussion of your goals  Guided relaxation (induction)  Therapeutic suggestions or techniques  Gentle return to full awareness

14. Will I remember what happens?

Yes, most people remember everything or most of the session.

15. What if I can’t relax?

That’s completely fine. Hypnosis doesn’t require perfect relaxation—your therapist will guide you at your own pace.

16. Can I get “stuck” in hypnosis?

No. You will naturally return to full awareness, even if the session is interrupted.

Special Situations

17. Can children and teenagers benefit from hypnotherapy?

Yes, often very well. Young people tend to respond quickly due to their natural imagination and openness.

18. Does hypnotherapy work online?

Yes. Online hypnotherapy can be just as effective as in-person sessions, provided you are in a quiet, comfortable environment.

Practical Questions

19. How should I prepare for a session?

Wear comfortable clothing  Avoid heavy meals just before  Come with an open mind  Think about your goals

20. What if it doesn’t work for me?

Results vary, but your therapist can adapt techniques to suit you. Openness and willingness to engage are key factors.
